Ludus Thronis: De novem orbis miraculis. The Wonders of the Ancient World in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire

Abstract

In George.R.R. Martin's series of novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, and in its adaptation to the TV screen with the title of A Game of Thrones, we can find multiple historical, artistic, geographical and literary references that take us back to our own essence as a civilization. In this context, we understand the appropriation of elements of Antiquity to give a deep depth to a discourse, whether written or visual. This gives plausibility and a familiar scenario to new worlds and stories. In this way, we make them our own more easily. This great influence is not reserved only to the artistic or visual field. It is deeper, as it reflects the creation of a list of wonders as such by a scholar and traveler named Lomas Longstrider. In his book, Wonders Created by Man, he collects nine wonders of the world, emulating the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World as a new Antipater of Sidon or Philo of Byzantium. Thus, we discover the Great Pyramid of Meereen, the Titan of Braavos, the Lighthouse of Oldtown, the gardens and walls of Quarth... and other scenarios that drink directly from the classical sources and their cultural transmission throughout history.

En la serie de novelas de G.R.R. Martin, Canción de hielo y fuego, y en su adaptación a la pantalla con el título de Juego de tronos, podemos encontrar múltiples referencias históricas, artísticas, geográficas, literarias… que nos retrotraen a nuestra propia esencia como civilización. En este contexto, se entiende la apropiación de elementos de la Antigüedad para dotar de un profundo calado un discurso, ya sea escrito o visual. Dichas apropiaciones otorgan verosimilitud y un escenario familiar a nuevos mundos e historias que, de esta manera, hacemos propios con mayor facilidad. Esta gran influencia no se reserva sólo al ámbito artístico o visual, sino que es más profunda, pues refleja la creación de una lista de maravillas como tal por parte de un escriba y viajero: Lomas Pasolargo. En su libro, Maravillas creadas por el hombre, recoge nueve maravillas del mundo, emulando las Siete Maravillas del mundo antiguo como nuevo Antípatro de Sidón o Filón de Bizancio. Así, descubrimos la Gran Pirámide de Meereen, el Titán de Braavos, el Faro de Antigua, los jardines y murallas de Quarth… y otros escenarios que beben directamente de las fuentes clásicas en torno a las Siete Maravillas del mundo antiguo y de su transmisión cultural a lo largo de la Historia.
