Abstract

The fair and festivity posters are a first-rate source of historical documents for analyzing the identity of local and regional tourist destinations. This is because, aside from being considered the advertising images of a city or town in a specific moment in time (festivities), they provide information about the identity elements that represent the citizens and the society from social, political and cultural parameters year after year. In this sense, this work presents an analysis of regional Spanish tourism iconography utilizing the case of Murcia as a model, through the advertising posters of the September Festivities, the Spring Festivities, and Easter, created by the Murcia town hall between 1939 and 1960. The research conducted has two objectives. The first is to identify the iconographic motifs, the subjects, the characters and places that are more represented in the posters created in Murcia, and the second is to relate the images that play a leading role in these posters with the official tourism promotion and discourse of the Regime and their conception of the Spanish identity.
