Abstract

According to data from the latest Survey on equipment and use of information technologies (INE,2021) internet use stands at 73.3% in the 65-74 age group, being the segment that has experienced the largest increase in the last two years (up 3.6% compared to 2020 and 9.7% more than in 2019). However, the digital divide remains a barrier for people over 75 years of age, those living alone, those with low levels of education or those living in rural areas. The study also looks at whether orality can be used as an opportunity for the digital connectivity of the elderly and the opinion of this group on whether they would consider it useful to receive specific training on the consumption of radio on demand and the creation of radio content to connect them with their environment and improve their media literacy. The results obtained confirm that there is a digital divide with respect to access to both online radio and on-demand audio content. This disconnection is much more pronounced in rural areas, mainly due to the lack of knowledge of the technology; however, there is a great interest of the elderly in learning these new technologies as well as in the possibility of consuming and producing content that could be useful to them and that would contribute to inform them, entertain them and, ultimately, improve their quality of life.
