Abstract
This chapter analyzes Carlos Saura's first fictional work, Los golfos (1959), highlighting its historical, aesthetic and sociocultural relevance in the context of Spanish and European cinema of the late 1950s. The film, which emerged in an environment of limited resources and under the influence of modern film discourses- especially Italian neorealism, British free cinema and the French nouvelle vague - faced censorship, becoming a pioneer within what was later to be known as New Spanish Cinema (NCE). Consequently, the manuscript examines the way in which, by being filmed entirely in real locations in Madrid, its socio-critical intention was enhanced by the fact of portraying a peripheral landscape far from the tourist and monumental image of the capital, which leads to it being considered the genesis of the so-called quinqui cinema.
