Abstract
Sharing is as old as mankind itself, but collaborative consumption and the sharing economy are phenomena born in the internet age that represent an attractive alternative for consumers and whose rise has sparked intense debate about their definition, effects and future regulation. Companies such as Airbnb, Uber and other platforms have transformed the accommodation and transport markets and the way we consume and work or interact. In this paper we consider the possible scope of both phenomena and analyse the reasons for their initial success and whether the term is still current or whether there is an alternative on the horizon. To do so, we start with a documentary analysis and complete it with semi-standardised interviews with experts (seven in total) through a questionnaire that allows us to reflect on the initial success of the phenomenon and the emergence of on-demand platforms, the platform economy and digital capitalism.
