Abstract

In this article we analyse the relevance of intertextuality in the creation of memes. To do so, we work with a sample of 2782 meme units from written sources in Spanish and carry out a quantitative and qualitative study of intertextuality in Internet memes. We observed that television and, to a lesser extent, cinema are the main sources of intertextuality. We also see that the spaces on the web where memes circulate have an impact on the use of intertextualities and that, often, recent cultural objects receive many references at the height of their hype and then quickly decline while others maintain their importance. Finally, we verify that the use of semiotic meme formats (which we call meme-archetypes) has an important relationship with the use of intertextualities in meme production. Based on the observed evidence, we conclude that cultural and media consumption, virtual community-based semiotic practices and previously established meme production practices have an important impact on the use of intertextuality in memes.
