Abstract
Despite considerable progress in the field of education, gender disparities continue to persist, particularly in school-based physical education (PE). Gender stereotypes (GS) remain pervasive social constructs that influence children’s perceptions, attitudes, socio-relational behaviours, and motivation toward physical activity. These stereotypes begin shaping expectations before birth and become embedded through early socialization processes, gradually influencing beliefs about what behaviours or competencies are deemed “appropriate” for boys and girls. Consequently, GS can significantly affect children’s engagement in movement activities, access to skill development, and long-term participation in sports. This issue directly aligns with the objectives of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (Goals 4 and 5), which call for inclusive, equitable education and gender equality.
