Sport and Transcendence: Man ́s Search for Ultimate Meaning

Abstract

Although its practice requires sacrifice and struggle, sport is essentially a ludic activity by which human beings can cultivate their natural capacities, both corporal and spiritual. Moreover, rightly exercised or contemplated, sport is a great instrument to generate values and virtues of several types. Among them, the present study seeks to emphasize the spiritual or religious values that some documents of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church especially want to highlight. Such values, we seek to connect here with the human search for an ultimate meaning of life and the natural desire for happiness that can only be achieved, it seems, in a transcendent order. Regarding this full happiness, sport would be a kind of sign, foretaste or substitute

Aunque su práctica exija de esfuerzo y lucha, el de-porte es una actividad esencialmente lúdica mediante la que el hombre puede cultivar sus capacidades naturales, corporales y espirituales. Rectamente ejercido o contemplado, además es capaz de alumbrar valores y virtudes de muy diversos tipos. Entre ellos, el presente estudio quiere hacer hincapié en los valores espirituales o religiosos que especialmente algunos textos del Magisterio de la Iglesia han querido resaltar. Dichos valores se ponen aquí en relación con la búsqueda humana de un sentido último para su vida y con el natural deseo de una felicidad que solo parece poder alcanzarse en un orden trascendente. Respecto de esta felicidad plena, el deporte sería una especie de anuncio, anticipo o sustitutivo
