Abstract

Medical indoor gymnastics, written by Dr. Daniel Gottlieb Moritz Schreber and published in Spain in 1861, was the first technical-practical book in the Spanish gymnastics field. This handbook was used by doctors, gymnastics educators, and teachers. The numerous editions and the popularity level that it reached make it the most representative and recommended gymnastics book during the 19th century. The aim of the present study is to determine the social scope of the work cited. The methodology is based on a hermeneutical documentary analysis of the original works of the time and, together with other studies in the area of social science, in developing a deconstructivist view of the work in question. We can use this Handbook to discover part of the pedagogical genealogy of gymnastics in Spain and to see how “indoor gymnastics” came to be a device for knowledge and power in the field of medicine and physical education

El Manual popular de gimnasia de sala médica e higiénica, escrito por el doctor Daniel Gottlob Moritz Schreber y publicado en España en 1861, fue la primera obra técnico-práctica de la gimnástica española. Este manual estuvo al servicio de médicos, profesores de gimnástica y maestros. Las numerosas ediciones y la popularidad que alcanzó el Manual lo convierten en la obra gimnástica más representativa y recomendada de todo el siglo XIX. El objeto de estudio se ubica en revelar el alcance social de la citada obra. La metodología se basa en el análisis documental hermenéutico de las obras originales de la época que, junto a otros estudios en el ámbito de las ciencias sociales, desarrolla una visión deconstructivista de la obra objeto de estudio. Con este Manual descubrimos parte de la genealogía pedagógica de la gimnástica en España y cómo “la gimnasia de sala” llegó a erigirse en un dispositivo de saber/poder en el campo del ejercicio de la medicina y de la educación física
